I agree, you want to understand all variables involved in deriving the lead time metric. Since this does come from a DB, there are many variables, processor time, function efficiency, system load, network traffic etc.

A Repeatability and Reliability analysis (Gage R&R) might help you understand how variable these times are say, at different times of the day, week or at the end of a quarter or given changes to the variables listed above. This is important since if your measurment system and your dependent variable is largely affected by these fluctuations it becomes more difficult to achieve improvement. This is more difficult, than say a tape-measure which is doesn't change, and the variability is between human readings and the level of accuracy.
